Grammar
1. Dictionary Form (ใใใใใ) of Verbs
In Japanese, each verb has a basic โdictionary form.โ This is the form listed in dictionaries and is used in many grammar constructions.
How to form dictionary form:
For Group I verbs (uโverbs): change the final ใใพใ ending from โใใใพใ / ใใใพใ / etc.โ to the โuโsoundโ โ e.g. ใใใพใ โ ใใ, ใฎใฟใพใ โ ใฎใ.
For Group II verbs (ruโverbs): drop ใใพใ and add ใใ โ e.g. ใในใพใ โ ใในใ, ใฟใพใ โ ใฟใ.
For Irregular verbs: ใใพใ โ ใใ, ใใพใ โ ใใ.
Once you know dictionary form, you can use it in expressions like โability,โ or as base for plain-form statements.
2. Expressing Ability / Possibility: ๏ฝใใจใใงใใพใ / ๏ฝใใงใใพใ
To say that you can do something โ that you have the ability or permission โ you use:
Noun + ใใงใใพใ โ โcan do / able to do (that noun/action)โ.
Verb (dictionary form) + ใใจใใงใใพใ โ for โcan do (that action)โ.
Examples:
ใใซใปใใใใงใใพใใใ โ I can speak Japanese.
ใใใขใใใฒใใใจใใงใใพใใใ โ I can play the piano.
This is very useful for talking about skills, hobbies, or capabilities. The goal of Lesson 18 includes enabling learners to talk about what they can or cannot do.
