Lesson Content

In Lesson 18, you learn how to use the dictionary form (plain form) of verbs and how to express abilities using ใ€œใ“ใจใŒใงใใพใ™, among other useful grammar. In this lesson you will be able to:

Change verbs from ใ€œใพใ™ form to dictionary form (plain form)

Say what you โ€œcan doโ€ or โ€œare able to doโ€

Talk about hobbies, abilities, and what you like to do

Grammar

1. Dictionary Form (ใ˜ใ—ใ‚‡ใ‘ใ„) of Verbs

In Japanese, each verb has a basic โ€œdictionary form.โ€ This is the form listed in dictionaries and is used in many grammar constructions.

How to form dictionary form:

For Group I verbs (uโ€‘verbs): change the final ใ€œใพใ™ ending from โ€œใ€œใ„ใพใ™ / ใ€œใ—ใพใ™ / etc.โ€ to the โ€œuโ€‘soundโ€ โ€” e.g. ใ‹ใใพใ™ โ†’ ใ‹ใ, ใฎใฟใพใ™ โ†’ ใฎใ‚€.

For Group II verbs (ruโ€‘verbs): drop ใ€œใพใ™ and add ใ€œใ‚‹ โ€” e.g. ใŸในใพใ™ โ†’ ใŸในใ‚‹, ใฟใพใ™ โ†’ ใฟใ‚‹.

For Irregular verbs: ใ—ใพใ™ โ†’ ใ™ใ‚‹, ใใพใ™ โ†’ ใใ‚‹.

Once you know dictionary form, you can use it in expressions like โ€œability,โ€ or as base for plain-form statements.

2. Expressing Ability / Possibility: ๏ฝžใ“ใจใŒใงใใพใ™ / ๏ฝžใŒใงใใพใ™

To say that you can do something โ€” that you have the ability or permission โ€” you use:

Noun + ใŒใงใใพใ™ โ€” โ€œcan do / able to do (that noun/action)โ€.

Verb (dictionary form) + ใ“ใจใŒใงใใพใ™ โ€” for โ€œcan do (that action)โ€.

Examples:

ใ€Œใซใปใ‚“ใ”ใŒใงใใพใ™ใ€‚ใ€ โ€” I can speak Japanese.

ใ€Œใƒ”ใ‚ขใƒŽใ‚’ใฒใใ“ใจใŒใงใใพใ™ใ€‚ใ€ โ€” I can play the piano.

This is very useful for talking about skills, hobbies, or capabilities. The goal of Lesson 18 includes enabling learners to talk about what they can or cannot do.
