Grammar

1. The ない‑form of Verbs (negative)

The “ない‑form” is used to make negative verbs (not do ~).

How to form (概要)

Group I verbs (u‑verbs): change final “‑u” sound to corresponding “a‑line” + ない

かきます → かかない

のみます → のまない

いきます → いかない

Group II verbs (ru‑verbs): drop る and add ない

たべます → たべない

みます → みない

Irregular verbs:

します → しない, きます → こない

2. Negative Request: ~ないでください (Please don’t ~)

Use this to politely ask someone not to do something.

Example:

「ここで　しゃしんを　とらないでください。」 — Please don’t take pictures here.

3. Obligation: ~なければなりません (must / have to ~)

Use the verb’s ない‑form (drop ない), then add なければなりません to express that you must do something.

Example:

「くすりを　のまなければなりません。」 — I must take medicine.

「まいにちにほんごを　べんきょうしなければなりません。」 — I have to study Japanese every day.

4. No obligation / Not necessary: ~なくてもいいです (Don’t have to ~)

This is used when it’s not necessary to do something. Use ない‑form (drop ない) + なくてもいいです.

Example:

「あした　こなくてもいいです。」 — You don’t have to come tomorrow.
