Lesson Content

In Lesson 16, you learn how to connect sentences and phrases using the โ€œteโ€‘formโ€ (ใ€œใฆ) of verbs, adjectives, nouns. Youโ€™ll also learn how to describe sequence of actions, combine descriptions, and use structures like โ€œใ€œใฆใ‹ใ‚‰โ€, โ€œใ€œใฆใ€ใ€œใฆโ€, โ€œใ€œใใฆ / ใ€œใงโ€, etc.

Grammar

1. Connecting multiple actions with ใ€œใฆใ€ใ€œใฆ

When you have two or more actions in a row, you can use verb teโ€‘form to connect them. The tense and time meaning depend on the final verb in the sequence.

Examples:

ใ€Œใ‚ใ•ใ‚ธใƒงใ‚ฎใƒณใ‚ฐใ‚’ใ—ใฆใ€ใ‚ทใƒฃใƒฏใƒผใ‚’ใ‚ใณใฆใ€ใ‹ใ„ใ—ใ‚ƒใธใ„ใใพใ™ใ€‚ใ€ โ€” In the morning I jog, take a shower, and go to work.

ใ€Œใ“ใ†ในใธใ„ใฃใฆใ€ใˆใ„ใŒใ‚’ใฟใฆใ€ใŠใกใ‚ƒใ‚’ใฎใฟใพใ—ใŸใ€‚ใ€ โ€” I went to Kobe, watched a movie, and drank tea.

2. Expressing โ€œafter doing ~, then ~โ€ with ใ€œใฆใ‹ใ‚‰ใ€ใ€œ

When you want to show that after finishing one action, another action happens, use ใ€œใฆใ‹ใ‚‰ใ€ใ€œ.

Examples:

ใ€Œใใซใธใ‹ใˆใฃใฆใ‹ใ‚‰ใ€ใกใกใฎใ‹ใ„ใ—ใ‚ƒใงใฏใŸใ‚‰ใใพใ™ใ€‚ใ€ โ€” After returning to my country, I work at my fatherโ€™s company.

ใ€Œใ‚ณใƒณใ‚ตใƒผใƒˆใŒใŠใ‚ใฃใฆใ‹ใ‚‰ใ€ใƒฌใ‚นใƒˆใƒฉใƒณใงใ—ใ‚‡ใใ˜ใ—ใพใ—ใŸใ€‚ใ€ โ€” After the concert ended, I ate at a restaurant.

3. Connecting adjectives or nouns / ใชโ€‘adjectives / nouns using ใฆโ€‘form / ใง / ใใฆ

ใ„โ€‘adjectives โ†’ drop ใ„, add ใ€œใใฆ to connect.

e.g. ใŠใŠใใ„ โ†’ ใŠใŠใใใฆ

ใกใ„ใ•ใ„ โ†’ ใกใ„ใ•ใใฆ

ใชโ€‘adjectives or nouns โ†’ add ใ€œใง to connect.

Examples:

ใ€Œใชใ‚‰ใฏใใ‚Œใ„ใงใ€ใ—ใšใ‹ใชใพใกใงใ™ใ€‚ใ€ โ€” Nara is beautiful and quiet.

ใ€Œใ“ใฎใธใ‚„ใฏใ‚ใ‹ใ‚‹ใใฆใ€ใฒใ‚ใ„ใงใ™ใ€‚ใ€ โ€” This room is bright and spacious. (sample pattern)

4. Combined โ€œtopic + subject + adjective/nounโ€ structure: Nโ‚ ใฏ Nโ‚‚ ใŒ ใ€œใงใ™

Used when describing an attribute or characteristic of something/person.

Example:

ใ€ŒใŠใŠใ•ใ‹ใฏใŸในใ‚‚ใฎใŒใŠใ„ใ—ใ„ใงใ™ใ€‚ใ€ โ€” As for Osaka, the food is delicious.

5. Question words ใฉใ†ใ‚„ใฃใฆ (How / by what means) and ใฉใ‚Œ๏ผใฉใฎ (which)

ใฉใ†ใ‚„ใฃใฆ โ€” to ask โ€œhow (to do something)โ€ or โ€œby what meansโ€. Answer often uses teโ€‘form verbs.

Example: ใ€Œใ ใ„ใŒใใพใงใฉใ†ใ‚„ใฃใฆใ„ใใพใ™ใ‹ใ€‚ใ€ โ€” How will you go to the university?

ใฉใ‚Œ๏ผใฉใฎ โ€” used to ask โ€œwhich oneโ€ among three or more objects/persons.

Example: ใ€Œใ‚ตใƒณใƒˆใ‚นใ•ใ‚“ใฏใฉใฎใฒใจใงใ™ใ‹ใ€‚ใ€ โ€” Which person is Mr. Santos?
