Minna no Nihongo Lesson 20

Lesson 20 teaches the plain / casual style (futsū‑tai) in Japanese. This is the form used when speaking casually with friends, family, or in informal writing.

1. How to change to plain form

Verbs

Polite ます → dictionary / plain form

行きます → 行く

食べます → 食べる

しません → しない

しました → した

買いませんでした → 買わなかった

い‑adjectives

Drop です; negative/past forms: 〜くない / 〜かった / 〜くなかった

いそがしいです → いそがしい

さむかったです → さむかった

な‑adjectives & nouns

Drop です / でした; use だ / じゃない / だった / じゃなかった

げんきです → げんきだ

すきでした → すきだった

Examples

Polite → Plain

あしたとうきょうへいきます。 → あしたとうきょうへいく。 — I will go to Tokyo tomorrow.

まいにちいそがしいです。 → まいにちいそがしい。 — I’m busy every day.

すもうがすきです。 → すもうがすきだ。 — I like sumo.
