Minna no Nihongo Lesson 13 – Grammar (Clear Explanation)

✅ 1. ～たいです (tai desu)

Use: To express what you want to do.

Meaning: “I want to …”

How to form it

Use Verb (ます-form stem) + たいです

Examples:

日本へ いきたいです。

I want to go to Japan.

すしを たべたいです。

I want to eat sushi.

えいがを みたいです。

I want to watch a movie.

Used for:

✔ expressing personal wishes

✔ travel plans

✔ food you want to eat

✔ activities you want to try

✅ 2. ～たいです cannot be used to ask about the listener’s desire directly

You cannot say:

❌ なにを たべたいですか (this is OK for close friends)

But normally use a softer form:

⭕ 何を たべますか (What will you eat?)

or

⭕ 何が いいですか (What would you like?)

✅ 3. ～に 行きます ( Purpose of movement )

Use: To show purpose of going somewhere.

Form:

Place + へ/に + Verb (ます-stem) + に 行きます

Examples:

きょうとへ かいものに いきます。

I am going to Kyoto to shop.

としょかんへ べんきょうに いきます。

I go to the library to study.

にほんへ りょこうに いきます。

I will go to Japan for travel.

Use this grammar for:

✔ shopping trips

✔ going out for meals

✔ going somewhere for an activity

✅ 4. どこか / なにか (somewhere / something)

Used when the speaker is unsure or when the place/thing is not specific.

Examples:

どこかへ いきたいです。

I want to go somewhere.

なにか たべたいです。

I want to eat something.

どこか いい ところが ありますか。

Is there somewhere good?

This grammar helps express general wants without detail.
