Minna no Nihongo Elementary Book 1 – Lesson 12 Grammar (Clear, Simple Explanation)

Lesson 12 teaches you how to describe feelings, conditions, impressions, and past experiences using adjectives.

There are two types of adjectives: い-adjectives and な-adjectives, and each follows different rules.

✅ 1. い-Adjectives (How They Change)

い-adjectives end with い, such as さむい, あつい, ひろい.

Form changes:

Present: さむいです

Negative: さむくないです

Past: さむかったです

Past Negative: さむくなかったです

Examples:

きょうは さむいです。

Today is cold.

きのうは さむくなかったです。

Yesterday wasn’t cold.

このへやは ひろかったです。

This room was spacious.

Use い-adjectives to describe:

weather, feelings, food, size, impressions.

✅ 2. な-Adjectives (How They Change)

These adjectives need な before a noun, such as しずか, にぎやか, べんり.

Form changes:

Present: しずかです

Negative: しずかじゃないです

Past: しずかでした

Past Negative: しずかじゃなかったです

Examples:

このまちは にぎやかです。

This town is lively.

このへやは しずかじゃないです。

This room is not quiet.

きのうは にぎやかでした。

Yesterday was lively.

Use な-adjectives to talk about:

states, conditions, personality, place descriptions.

✅ 3. Special Adjective: いい (Changes to よい)

The adjective いい becomes よい when you change the form.

Correct forms:

いいです → good

よくないです → not good

よかったです → was good

よくなかったです → was not good

Examples:

このレストランは いいです。

This restaurant is good.

きのうのパーティーは よかったです。

Yesterday’s party was good.

✅ 4. とても and すこし (Very / A little)

These words show degree.

とても = very

すこし = a little / slightly

Examples:

このケーキは とても あまいです。

This cake is very sweet.

きょうは すこし さむいです。

Today is a little cold.

✅ 5. Asking About Someone’s Experience: どうでしたか

Use どうでしたか to ask “How was it?”

Examples:

りょこうは どうでしたか。

How was the trip?

パーティーは どうでしたか。

How was the party?

Answer using past adjective forms:

とても たのしかったです。

It was very fun.

あまり よくなかったです。

It wasn’t very good.
