Lesson 38 – Japanese Grammar: のは, のが, のを


1. verb (root form) + のは + adjective + です


Used to describe an action as a topic.


Structure:

verb (plain form) + <span style="color:#ff4500">のは</span> + adjective + です


Examples:


にほんごをべんきょうするのはたのしいです。

Nihongo wo benkyou suru no wa tanoshii desu.

Studying Japanese is fun.


はしるのはたいへんです。

Hashiru no wa taihen desu.

Running is tough.



2. verb (root form) + のが + adjective + です


Used to express feelings or opinions about an action.


Structure:

verb (plain form) + <span style="color:#1e90ff">のが</span> + adjective + です


Examples:


およぐのがすきです。

Oyogu no ga suki desu.

I like swimming.


かくのがむずかしいです。

Kaku no ga muzukashii desu.

Writing is difficult.



3. verb (root form) + のを + わすれました (wasuremashita)


Used to say you forgot to do something.


Structure:

verb (plain form) + <span style="color:#32cd32">のを</span> + わすれました


Examples:


しゅくだいをするのをわすれました。

Shukudai wo suru no wo wasuremashita.

I forgot to do my homework.


でんわするのをわすれました。

Denwa suru no wo wasuremashita.

I forgot to make a phone call.



4. verb (root form) + のを + しっていますか (shitte imashka)


Used to ask if someone knows about an action or fact.


Structure:

verb (plain form) + <span style="color:#32cd32">のを</span> + しっていますか


Examples:


にほんのぶんかをしっているのをしっていますか。

Nihon no bunka wo shitte iru no wo shitte imashka?

Do you know about Japanese culture?


このほんのないようをしっているのをしっていますか。

Kono hon no naiyou wo shitte iru no wo shitte imashka?

Do you know the content of this book?



5. verb/adjective (plain form) + のは + noun + です


Used to explain that an action or quality is connected to a noun.


Structure:

verb/adjective (plain form) + <span style="color:#ff4500">のは</span> + noun + です


Examples:


にほんごをべんきょうするのはたのしいことです。

Nihongo wo benkyou suru no wa tanoshii koto desu.

Studying Japanese is a fun thing.


はやくはしるのはすぽーつです。

Hayaku hashiru no wa supootsu desu.

Running fast is a sport.
