Minna no Nihongo 2 โ€“ Lesson 50 Grammar (Kenjougo)

Minna no Nihongo2 LLesson 50 focuses on kenjougo (humble form).

Kenjougo is used when you talk about your own actions politely to someone important like a teacher, boss, or customer.


The idea is simple:

You make yourself lower to show respect to the other person.

You do NOT use kenjougo for the other personโ€™s action.

You use it only for watashi / our side.


๐Ÿ”น Grammar 1 โ€” Special Humble Verbs

Some verbs change into special humble forms.

ikimasu / kimasu โ†’ mairimasu

imasu โ†’ orimasu

tabemasu / nomimasu / moraimasu โ†’ itadakimasu

iimasu โ†’ moushimasu

shimasu โ†’ itashimasu

kikimasu / tazunemasu / ikimasu โ†’ ukagaimasu

shitte imasu โ†’ zonjite imasu

mimasu โ†’ haiken shimasu

aimasu โ†’ o me ni kakarimasu


Examples:

- ใ‚ใŸใ— ใฏ ใ‚ใ—ใŸ ใ‹ใ„ใ—ใ‚ƒ ใธ ใพใ„ใ‚Šใพใ™ใ€‚

I will go to the company politely.


- ใ›ใ‚“ใ›ใ„ ใซ ใ—ใคใ‚‚ใ‚“ ใ‚’ ใ†ใ‹ใŒใ„ใพใ™ใ€‚

I will ask the teacher politely.


๐Ÿ”น Grammar 2 โ€” ใŠ / ใ” + ใพใ™ form + ใ—ใพใ™

When there is no special humble verb, use this pattern.

Pattern:

- ใŠ / ใ” + verb (ใพใ™ stem) + ใ—ใพใ™


Examples:

- ใ‚‚ใค โ†’ ใŠ ใ‚‚ใกใ—ใพใ™

- ใคใŸใˆใ‚‹ โ†’ ใŠ ใคใŸใˆใ—ใพใ™

- ใ‚ใ‚“ใชใ„ใ™ใ‚‹ โ†’ ใ” ใ‚ใ‚“ใชใ„ใ—ใพใ™

- ใฆใคใ ใ† โ†’ ใŠ ใฆใคใ ใ„ใ—ใพใ™


Example sentence:

- ใ‚ใŸใ— ใŒ ใ‚ใชใŸ ใ‚’ ใ” ใ‚ใ‚“ใชใ„ใ—ใพใ™ใ€‚

I will guide you politely.


๐Ÿ”น Grammar 3 โ€” ใŠ / ใ” + noun + ใ—ใพใ™

Some nouns become polite actions.

Pattern:

- ใŠ / ใ” + noun + ใ—ใพใ™


Examples:

- ใงใ‚“ใ‚ โ†’ ใŠ ใงใ‚“ใ‚ใ—ใพใ™

- ใ—ใ‚‡ใ†ใ‹ใ„ โ†’ ใ” ใ—ใ‚‡ใ†ใ‹ใ„ใ—ใพใ™

- ใ‚ˆใ‚„ใ โ†’ ใ” ใ‚ˆใ‚„ใใ—ใพใ™


Example:

- ใ‚ใจใง ใŠ ใงใ‚“ใ‚ใ—ใพใ™ใ€‚

I will call you politely.


๐Ÿ”น Grammar 4 โ€” Asking or Visiting Politely

When you ask, visit, or listen politely, use humble verbs.

Pattern idea:

- person ใซ + humble verb


Example:

- ใ›ใ‚“ใ›ใ„ ใซ ใ—ใคใ‚‚ใ‚“ ใ‚’ ใ†ใ‹ใŒใ„ใพใ™ใ€‚

I will ask the teacher politely.


- ใ‹ใ„ใ—ใ‚ƒ ใซ ใ†ใ‹ใŒใ„ใพใ™ใ€‚

I will visit the company politely.


๐Ÿ”น Grammar 5 โ€” Meeting Politely

Instead of ใ‚ใ„ใพใ™, use:

ใŠ ใ‚ ใซ ใ‹ใ‹ใ‚Šใพใ™


Example:

- ใ‚‰ใ„ใ—ใ‚…ใ† ใ›ใ‚“ใ›ใ„ ใซ ใŠ ใ‚ ใซ ใ‹ใ‹ใ‚Šใพใ™ใ€‚

I will meet the teacher politely.


๐Ÿ”น Grammar 6 โ€” Tense with Humble Form

Humble verbs follow normal tense rules.

Past:

- ใใฎใ† ใ‹ใ„ใ—ใ‚ƒ ใธ ใพใ„ใ‚Šใพใ—ใŸใ€‚

I went politely.


Future:

- ใ‚ใ—ใŸ ใงใ‚“ใ‚ ใ‚’ ใ„ใŸใ—ใพใ™ใ€‚

I will call politely.


๐Ÿ”น Grammar 7 โ€” Negative Form

You can make negative humble form normally.


Examples:

- ใใ‚‡ใ† ใฏ ใพใ„ใ‚Šใพใ›ใ‚“ใ€‚

I will not go politely.


- ใพใ  ใ†ใ‹ใŒใ„ใพใ›ใ‚“ใ€‚

I have not asked yet.


Remember:

Kenjougo = my action polite.


๐Ÿ”น Key Point to Remember

Kenjougo is used when:

โœ” talking about yourself politely

โœ” speaking to teacher, boss, customer

โœ” using business Japanese

It is NOT used for friends or family in casual talk.
