MINNA NO NIHONGO 2 - LESSON 48 โ€“ CAUSATIVE FORM

WHAT IS THE CAUSATIVE FORM

The causative form in Japanese is used when one person makes or lets another person do something. it means:

- make someone do something

- let someone do something

- allow someone to do something

This grammar is very important for JLPT N4 and daily conversation.

BASIC CAUSATIVE SENTENCE PATTERN

person ใซ / ใ‚’ + action + causative verb

HOW TO MAKE CAUSATIVE VERBS

GROUP 1 VERBS (U VERBS)

Rule: Change the final 'u' sound to 'a' sound, then add ใ›ใพใ™

Examples:

- ใ‚ˆใฟใพใ™ โ†’ ใ‚ˆใ‚€ โ†’ ใ‚ˆใพใ›ใพใ™

make / let someone read

- ใฎใฟใพใ™ โ†’ ใฎใ‚€ โ†’ ใฎใพใ›ใพใ™

make / let someone drink

- ใ„ใใพใ™ โ†’ ใ„ใ โ†’ ใ„ใ‹ใ›ใพใ™

make / let someone go

- ใฏใชใ—ใพใ™ โ†’ ใฏใชใ™ โ†’ ใฏใชใ•ใ›ใพใ™

make / let someone speak

GROUP 2 VERBS (RU VERBS)

Rule: Remove ใ‚‹, then add ใ•ใ›ใพใ™

Examples:

- ใŸในใพใ™ โ†’ ใŸในใ‚‹ โ†’ ใŸในใ•ใ›ใพใ™

make / let someone eat

- ใฟใพใ™ โ†’ ใฟใ‚‹ โ†’ ใฟใ•ใ›ใพใ™

make / let someone see

IRREGULAR VERBS

- ใ—ใพใ™ โ†’ ใ™ใ‚‹ โ†’ ใ•ใ›ใพใ™

make / let someone do

- ใใพใ™ โ†’ ใใ‚‹ โ†’ ใ“ใ•ใ›ใพใ™

make / let someone come

USING THE CAUSATIVE FORM WITH ใซ PARTICLE

The particle ใซ marks the person who does the action. This is the most common and safest pattern for JLPT N4.

Examples:

- ใ‚ใŸใ—ใฏ ใ“ใฉใ‚‚ใซ ใปใ‚“ใ‚’ ใ‚ˆใพใ›ใพใ™

I make my child read a book.

- ใ›ใ‚“ใ›ใ„ใฏ ใŒใใ›ใ„ใซ ใ—ใ‚…ใใ ใ„ใ‚’ ใ•ใ›ใพใ™

The teacher makes the student do homework.

Use ใซ for normal actions like reading, eating, studying, and working.

USING THE CAUSATIVE FORM WITH ใ‚’ PARTICLE

The particle ใ‚’ is used when the action involves:

- movement

- direction

- position

- strong control

Examples:

- ใถใกใ‚‡ใ†ใฏ ใƒŸใƒฉใƒผใ•ใ‚“ใ‚’ ใ‚ใ‚ใ‚Šใ‹ใธ ใ„ใ‹ใ›ใพใ—ใŸ

The boss sent Miller-san to America.

- ใกใกใฏ ใ‚€ใ™ใ“ใ‚’ ใงใ‚“ใ—ใ‚ƒใฎ ใชใ‹ใง ใŸใŸใ›ใพใ™

The father makes his son stand inside the train.

If you are unsure in JLPT, use ใซ. Use ใ‚’ mainly with movement or position verbs.

CAUSATIVE TE FORM + ใ„ใŸใ ใ‘ใพใ›ใ‚“ใ‹

This pattern is used to make very polite requests.

Meaning in English:

- Could you please let me do something?

- May I be allowed to do something?

Examples:

- ใงใ‚“ใ‚ใ‚’ ใคใ‹ใ‚ใ›ใฆ ใ„ใŸใ ใ‘ใพใ›ใ‚“ใ‹

Could you please let me use the phone?

- ใ“ใ“ใง ใ—ใ‚ƒใ—ใ‚“ใ‚’ ใจใ‚‰ใ›ใฆ ใ„ใŸใ ใ‘ใพใ›ใ‚“ใ‹

Could you please allow me to take a photo here?

This form is used in offices, formal situations, and when speaking politely.
