JLPT N4 Japanese Grammar Lesson: Tokoro Desu, Bakari Desu, and Hazu Desu


This lesson explains three important JLPT N4 grammar points: tokoro desu, bakari desu, and hazu desu. All examples are grammatically correct and suitable for JLPT N4 exam preparation.


TOKORO DESU

Meaning:

At the exact moment / just about to / just finished


When to use:

Use tokoro desu to describe the exact timing of an action.


How to use:

verb Dic. Form+ tokoro desu

verb + te form iru + tokoro desu

verb (ta form) + tokoro desu


Examples:

Ima taberu tokoro desu.

(I am just about to eat.)


Ima tabete iru tokoro desu.

(I am eating now.)


Ima tabeta tokoro desu.

(I have just eaten.)


BAKARI DESU

Meaning:

Only / just (based on feeling, not exact time)


When to use:

Use bakari desu to show that something is excessive or has just happened from the speaker’s point of view.


How to use:

verb (ta form) + bakari desu


Examples:

Kita bakari desu.

(I just arrived.)


HAZU DESU

Meaning:

Should be / expected to be


When to use:

Use hazu desu when you have a logical reason or expectation.


How to use:

verb (plain form) + hazu desu

i adjective ( plain form )+ hazu desu

Na adjective (na) + hazu desu

noun (no )+ hazu desu


Examples:

Kare wa kuru hazu desu.

(He should come.)


Ame ga futte iru kara samui hazu desu.

(It should be cold because it is raining.)


Ano hito wa gakusei no hazu desu.

(That person should be a student.)


QUICK COMPARISON

Tokoro desu → exact time

Bakari desu → speaker’s feeling

Hazu desu → logic or reason


JLPT N4 STUDY TIP

If the question shows exact timing, use tokoro desu.

If it shows feeling or exaggeration, use bakari desu.

If it shows reasoning or expectation, use hazu desu.
