The ta-form (たフォーム / ta-form) is one of the most important verb forms in Japanese. It is used to talk about past actions, experiences, completed events, and it is also used inside many grammar patterns like 「〜たら」, 「〜たあとで」, and 「〜たとき」.

This guide explains how to make the ta-form, why it works the way it does, and gives plenty of examples so you can learn it once and for all.

All Japanese is written in hiragana/katakana only, so JLPT N5–N4 learners can read it easily.

1. What is the ta-form?

The ta-form is the plain past tense of a verb.

It is the casual, everyday way of saying “ate, drank, went, did, saw, made,” etc.

Examples:

たべた — ate

のんだ — drank

いった — went

した — did

みた — saw

If you know the te-form, the ta-form is extremely easy.

Just change:

て → た

で → だ

Example:

かいて → かいた

のんで → のんだ

みて → みた

But let’s learn it from the base so it’s rock-solid.

2. Verb Groups (English Names Included)

Japanese verbs fall into three groups:

Group 1: Godan Verbs (う-verbs)

End in う, く, す, つ, ぬ, む, ぶ, ぐ, る (but NOT る-verbs)

Group 2: Ichidan Verbs (る-verbs)

End in る and have an e/i sound + る

Example: たべる, みる, ねる

Group 3: Irregular Verbs

Only: する, くる, and the special past of いく

3. How to form the ta-form (step-by-step)

Each group follows clear rules. Below are crystal-clear instructions and three examples each.

Group 2: る-verbs (Ichidan Verbs)

Rule: Remove る, add た.

Examples (3)

1. たべる → たべた

taberu → tabeta — “ate”

2. みる → みた

miru → mita — “saw”

3. ねる → ねた

neru → neta — “slept”

This group is the easiest. Always remove る + add た.

Group 1: う-verbs (Godan Verbs)

These change based on the final kana.

Here are the rules:

1) Verbs ending in う / つ / る → った

Examples:

1. あう → あった

au → atta — “met”

2. まつ → まった

matsu → matta — “waited”

3. とる → とった

toru → totta — “took”

2) Verbs ending in む / ぶ / ぬ → んだ

Examples:

1. のむ → のんだ

nomu → nonda — “drank”

2. あそぶ → あそんだ

asobu → asonda — “played”

3. しぬ → しんだ

shinu → shinda — “died”

3) Verbs ending in く → いた

Examples:

1. かく → かいた

kaku → kaita — “wrote”

2. あるく → あるいた

aruku → aruita — “walked”

3. きく → きいた

kiku → kiita — “heard/listened”

4) Verbs ending in ぐ → いだ

Examples:

1. およぐ → およいだ

oyogu → oyoida — “swam”

2. ぬぐ → ぬいだ

nugu → nuida — “took off (clothes)”

3. さわぐ → さわいだ

sawagu → sawaida — “made noise”

5) Verbs ending in す → した

Examples:

1. はなす → はなした

hanasu → hanashita — “spoke”

2. けす → けした

kesu → keshita — “erased/turned off”

3. かえす → かえした

kaesu → kaeshita — “returned (something)”

Group 3: Irregular Verbs

These simply must be memorized, but they are very few.

1) する → した

Examples:

べんきょうする → べんきょうした

そうじする → そうじした

れんしゅうする → れんしゅうした

2) くる → きた

Examples:

くる → きた

もってくる → もってきた

つれてくる → つれてきた

3) Special case: いく → いった

This verb follows the う / つ / る pattern even though it ends in く.

Examples:

いく → いった

がっこうへいく → がっこうへいった

ともだちのいえへいく → ともだちのいえへいった

4. Major Uses of the ta-form

A) Past Action (simple past tense)

Used at the end of a sentence to say “did ~”.

きのう、ばんごはんをつくった。

I cooked dinner yesterday.

きょう、ともだちにあった。

I met a friend today.

えいがをみた。

B) Experience (〜たことがある)

Used to say “have done (at least once).”

すしをたべたことがある。

1) After (〜たあとで)

2) When (〜たとき)

えいがをみたとき、ないた。

3) If / When (〜たら)

あめがふったら、でかけない。
