Lesson 1 teaches you how to:

• Introduce yourself

• Introduce other people

• Say your name, job, nationality

🔥 2. Grammar of Lesson 1

● A は B です

Meaning: A is B.

This is the basic “to be” sentence in Japanese.

Structure:

A (topic) + は + B (information) + です

Examples:

• わたしはさとうです。

→ I am Sato.

• わたしはがくせいです。

→ I am a student.

● A は B じゃありません

Meaning: A is not B.

Examples:

• わたしはせんせいじゃありません。

→ I am not a teacher.

● A は B ですか

Meaning: Is A B? (Question)

Examples:

• あなたはがくせいですか。

→ Are you a student?

Answer patterns:

• はい、そうです。

• いいえ、そうではありません。

● ～さん (polite title)

Used after names for respect.

• たなかさん

• まりさん

❌ Never use ～さん with your own name.

● ～じん (nationality)

• にほんじん → Japanese

• ねぱーるじん → Nepali

• いんどじん → Indian

(But lesson 1 does not deeply teach nationality; still used in kaiwa.)

🔥 3. Kaiwa Explanation (Lesson 1 Dialogue)

Kaiwa helps you understand real conversation.

Kaiwa 1: はじめまして

はじめまして。

→ Nice to meet you (start).

わたしはすずきです。

→ I am Suzuki.

どうぞよろしくおねがいします。

→ Please be kind to me. / I’m in your care.

This greeting is VERY important.

Use it when you meet someone for the first time.

Kaiwa 2: こちらはさとうさんです

こちらはさとうさんです。

→ This is Mr./Ms. Sato. (Introducing someone)

さとうさんはとうきょうだいがくのせんせいです。

→ Sato is a teacher of Tokyo University.

(We avoid kanji; “だいがく” means university.)

Note:

• こちら = this person (polite)

• の = possession (“of”)

Only the useful ones for understanding Lesson 1 homework.

• わたし – I

• あなた – you

• かれ – he

• かのじょ – she

• せんせい – teacher

• がくせい – student

• かいしゃいん – company worker

• しゃいん – employee

• どなた – who (polite)

• はい – yes

• いいえ – no

• これ – this

• それ – that

• はじめまして – Nice to meet you

• どうぞよろしくおねがいします – Please take care of me

● もんだい 1 – Choosing Correct Word

Focus on:

• わたし / あなた

• せんせい / がくせい

• これ / それ

Read the sentence, check who is speaking.

● もんだい 2 – Making Simple Sentences

Practice:

A は B です

Example:

• わたし＿＿がくせい＿＿。

→ わたしはがくせいです。

Add か at the end.

• あなたはせんせいです＿＿

→ ですか。

Use this pattern:

③ （country）からきました (this is used in L2 but acceptable)
